Nutrition for Mother Dogs

Pregnancy and lactation place significant nutritional demands on a mother dog. During these stages, she requires sufficient nutrition to maintain her own body condition while supporting the development and nourishment of her puppies.

Royal Canin Maxi Starter is designed to provide complete nutrition during this important period, helping support the mother's nutritional requirements from late pregnancy through lactation.

Maintaining appropriate feeding amounts and access to fresh water is particularly important for nursing mothers.

Support During Lactation

Lactation is an especially demanding stage because the mother provides nutrition to her puppies through milk.

A suitable complete diet can help provide the nutrients and energy required during this period. Feeding quantities should be adjusted according to the number of puppies, the mother's body condition and the stage of lactation.

Always follow the manufacturer's feeding recommendations and veterinary guidance where appropriate.

Early Puppy Nutrition

Young puppies have rapidly developing bodies and require specialised nutrition to support their growth.

This formula is designed for the early growth stage and helps provide nutritional support during the transition from dependence on mother's milk toward solid food.

The food can be prepared in a softened consistency when appropriate, making it easier for young puppies to consume during weaning.

Weaning Support

Weaning is an important transition period when puppies gradually move from mother's milk to solid food.

Royal Canin Maxi Starter can be incorporated into a structured weaning routine. Softening the kibble with warm water can create a more easily manageable texture for young puppies.

As puppies become accustomed to solid food, the amount of added water can gradually be reduced until they are comfortable eating the food in its normal dry form.

Digestive Health Support

The digestive system of a young puppy is still developing, so digestive tolerance is an important consideration during weaning.

This formula is designed to provide appropriate nutrition while supporting normal digestive function during the early growth stage.

Introducing solid food gradually and avoiding unnecessary dietary changes can also help puppies adapt more comfortably.

Natural Immune Support

Young puppies experience important changes in their immune development during the first stages of life.

Appropriate nutrition during this period provides essential nutritional support while the puppy's natural immune defences continue developing.

A clean environment, appropriate veterinary care, vaccination according to veterinary recommendations and a balanced diet all contribute to healthy puppy development.

Suitable for Large-Breed Dogs

Large-breed puppies have specific growth requirements because they can experience significant increases in body size during development.

Royal Canin Maxi Starter is designed specifically around the nutritional needs of large-breed mothers and their puppies during the early stages of life.

Careful feeding and portion control are important to support steady, appropriate growth.

Feeding Guide

Feed Royal Canin Maxi Starter Mother & Babydog Large Breed Dog Food according to the current packaging feeding guide.

For mother dogs, the appropriate amount varies according to:

Stage of pregnancy
Stage of lactation
Number of puppies
Mother's body weight
Body condition
Individual nutritional needs

For puppies, feeding quantities should be based on their age, expected adult size and developmental stage.

Young puppies may require several small meals throughout the day. Follow the manufacturer's feeding recommendations and veterinary guidance for individual puppies.

Always provide fresh, clean drinking water, particularly for nursing mothers and weaning puppies.

Food Preparation & Weaning

For very young puppies beginning the weaning process, the dry food may be softened with warm water according to the manufacturer's instructions.

A gradual approach can be used:

Begin with a soft, easily manageable consistency.
Offer small meals several times throughout the day.
Gradually reduce the amount of added water as puppies become more comfortable eating solid food.
Continue monitoring appetite, stool quality and growth.
Transition fully to the appropriate dry feeding consistency as the puppies mature.

Do not leave softened food at room temperature for extended periods. Prepare fresh portions as required.

Food Transition Guide

If the mother or puppies are being changed from another diet, introduce the new food gradually unless a veterinarian recommends otherwise.

A typical transition can be completed over approximately 7 days, progressively increasing the new food while reducing the previous diet.

For young puppies during weaning, the transition should be managed carefully to minimise digestive upset.

Avoid introducing multiple new foods, treats or supplements simultaneously.
